Video shows Israeli missile blowing up Iranian rocket launcher in Syria

Video shows Israeli missile blowing up Iranian rocket launcher in SyriaIsrael has released video of the moment one of its missiles destroyed what they called an Iranian rocket launcher in Syria after accusing Tehran’s forces of attacking the Golan Heights earlier. Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, said Iran had “crossed a red line” and that the resulting bombardment against targets in Syria “was a consequence”. Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman warned: “If we get rain, they’ll get a flood.” The Israel Defence Forces released the video, which showed soldiers standing near “an SA22 aerial interception system” shortly before the missile blew it up.  The launcher is short to medium range surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft artillery weapons system.   The bombardment led to calls for calm from Russia, France, Germany and Britain and the European Union, while the United States put the blame squarely on Iran and stressed Israel’s right to “self-defence”. An image grab from a video released on May 10, 2018 by the “Central War Media” and broadcast on Syria’s official TV purportedly shows Syrian air defence systems intercepting Israeli missiles Credit: AFP Germany and Britain joined the United States in denouncing the rocket fire towards the Israel-occupied Golan Heights they also said was carried out by Iran, while France reiterated its “unwavering support for Israel’s security”. Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani told German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a telephone call that he did not want “new tensions” in the Middle East. Rouhani did not mention of Israel’s strikes in Syria, or those against the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. But the chairman of his country’s parliamentary committee on foreign affairs, Allaeddine Boroujerdi, condemned the strikes, warning that “Israel has entered a dangerous game”. Missile fire is seen from Damascus, Credit: Reuters The Israeli raids in Syria, which a monitor said killed 23 fighters, were one of the largest Israeli military operations in recent years and the biggest such assault on Iranian targets, the Israeli military said. “We hit nearly all the Iranian infrastructure in Syria,” Mr Lieberman said. “I hope we’ve finished this episode and everyone understood.”

Opinion: What stands between Bolton and blowing up the world?

News that John Bolton will be Donald Trump’s third national security adviser in 13 months has caused much hand-wringing, wailing and rending of garments among Washington’s foreign policy elite. And with some justification: Add Trump’s nominee for secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, and you have two ideological hawks who seem to prefer shooting first abroad and asking questions later.
