Texas police officer faces manslaughter charge over 'wrong flat' fatal shooting of neighbour

Texas police officer faces manslaughter charge over 'wrong flat' fatal shooting of neighbourAn American police officer who says she mistook her neighbour’s apartment for her own when she fatally shot him has been arrested on a manslaughter charge. Amber Guyger was booked into the Kaufman County Jail, in Dallas, Texas, after being taken into custody on Sunday over the off-duty shooting. She was later released on bond, having posting a £232,000 ($300,000) bail, according to reports. Ms Guyger fatally shot 26-year-old Botham Jean at the victim’s apartment, having mistakenly entered the flat thinking it was her own.  The 30-year-old, who has been on the force for four years, now faces a possible manslaughter charge over the shooting late on Thursday.  Botham Jean leading worship at a university presidential reception in 2017 Credit: Botham Jean leading worship at a university presidential reception in 2017 Mr Jean was described as a devout Christian who graduated from a university in Arkansas and was working for PricewaterhouseCoopers. Lawyers for Mr Jean’s family had been calling for Ms Guyger’s arrest, claiming the fact that she had not been detained days after the shooting showed she was receiving favourable treatment.  The group Mothers Against Police Brutality said the arrest is a “first step” toward justice and accountability but should have come sooner.  Grant Jean, 15, and his mother Allison Jean, who are the brother and mother of Botham Jean, with another churchgoer during a prayer service for the shooting victim on Sunday Credit: Shaban Athuman /The Dallas Morning News via AP  Co-founder Sara Mokuria said the group now expects transparency in the case. Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings tweeted a statement on Sunday night in which he thanked investigators, asked for continued prayers for Mr Jean’s family and said he appreciated that citizens and community leaders “were so respectful of the investigative process over these past few days”. Meanwhile, Jean’s family also hired lawyer Benjamin Crump, who is best known for representing the families of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown. According to police, Ms Guyger shot and killed Mr Jean after returning in uniform to the South Side Flats, where they both had apartments, following her shift.  Solomon Grayson, six, stands next to a memorial during a Mothers Against Police Brutality candlelight vigil for Botham Jean Credit: Shaban Athuman /The Dallas Morning News via AP  She reported the shooting to dispatchers and told officers who responded that she had mistaken Mr Jean’s apartment for her own. Many questions remain about what led her to shoot Mr Jean. Police Chief U. Renee Hall said the officer’s blood was drawn at the scene so that it could be tested for alcohol and drugs. Investigators have not released the results of those tests.
