UK palace says no comment on report Markle's father won't attend wedding

UK palace says no comment on report Markle's father won't attend weddingPrince Harry’s office declined to comment on Monday on a report by U.S. celebrity news site TMZ that the father of his U.S. fiancee Meghan Markle would not attend the couple’s glittering wedding in Britain on Saturday. TMZ said on Monday that Thomas Markle had decided not to attend the marriage of his actress daughter to the British prince, who is Queen Elizabeth’s grandson, because he did not wish to embarrass the royals after media reports that he had staged paparazzi photographs. “We have got nothing on this at the moment,” a spokesman for Kensington Palace, Harry’s office, said.

Pakistan condemns ex-PM Sharif over comment on attack on India

Pakistan condemns ex-PM Sharif over comment on attack on IndiaBy Asif Shahzad ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – Pakistan’s top civil and military leaders on Monday condemned a suggestion by ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif that Islamist militants who killed 166 people in India in 2008 had crossed the border from Pakistan. The comments – in which Sharif implied he was removed from office by the Supreme Court last year for trying to end military support for anti-India militants – led to an uproar in Pakistan, where criticizing the military is increasingly considered a “red line” that cannot be crossed.

Emmanuel Macron's 'delicious wife' comment leaves people scratching heads

Emmanuel Macron's 'delicious wife' comment leaves people scratching headsThere’s no doubting French President Emmanuel Macron’s excellent grasp of English. But given French and English share numerous words that sound similar but have different meanings, there’s bound to be some expressions that get lost in translation. SEE ALSO: French dude sues France for seizing France.com domain Macron, who is currently visiting Australia, left people scratching their heads when he referred to the Australian prime minister’s wife, Lucy Turnbull, as “delicious” at a press conference on Wednesday.  “I want to thank you for your welcome, you and your delicious wife,” he said. Sometimes translation is tough. “I want to thank you for your welcome, you and your delicious wife” @EmmanuelMacron says to @TurnbullMalcolm pic.twitter.com/bIn6kokiYW — ABC Sydney (@abcsydney) May 2, 2018 Given that “delicious” primarily refers to food and can be construed as having a sexual connotation, people couldn’t help but snigger at the odd translation. “I want to thank you and your delicious wife for your warm welcome” – French President to Malcolm Turnbull. Not sure if this was something lost in translation or just something very ~French~ pic.twitter.com/OuzAG82Wwm — James O’Doherty (@jmodoh) May 2, 2018 Did Macron just say to Turnbull he wanted to thank his “delicious wife”? — Matthew Doran (@MattDoran91) May 2, 2018 Macron just said he wanted to thank Malcolm Turnbull and his “delicious wife”.You can take the man out of France but… — Alice Workman (@workmanalice) May 2, 2018 The French President @EmmanuelMacron just referrened to @TurnbullMalcolm ‘s “delicious wife”, in a slightly awkward mistranslation I imagine — Nadia Daly (@nadiasdaly) May 2, 2018 Of course, délicieux in French translates to delicious in English. While the primary definition in French is to indicate something is tasty, it can be used to describe someone as delightful. This might help explain the awkward mistranslation of the French President describing Malcolm Turnbull’s wife as “delicious”. pic.twitter.com/CTDE7ANunY — Jamie McKinnell (@jamie86) May 2, 2018 For English speakers, it’d be like using the French word “excité” to describe yourself as excited, but in French that means you’re sexually aroused. You learn something everyday. Even if you’re the President of France. WATCH: Google researchers are using AR microscopes to detect cancer

In rare comment, PetroVietnam says South China Sea tension to hurt offshore operations

In rare comment, PetroVietnam says South China Sea tension to hurt offshore operationsBy Khanh Vu HANOI (Reuters) – Tension in the South China Sea will hurt PetroVietnam’s offshore exploration and exploitation activities this year, the state-run oil and gas group said on Tuesday, weeks after the Southeast Asian nation suspended a project under pressure from China. Vietnam and China have been embroiled in maritime disputes in parts of the busy waterway, where China claims 90 percent of the potentially energy-rich maritime territory, which Vietnam calls the East Sea.
