U.S. ends practice that gave some immigrants reprieves from deportation

U.S. ends practice that gave some immigrants reprieves from deportationBy Mica Rosenberg NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Thursday barred immigration judges from a once-common practice of shelving deportation cases involving some immigrants with deep ties to the United States. The practice known as administrative closure allowed judges to clear low-priority cases off their dockets, effectively letting some immigrants remain indefinitely in the United States despite their lack of legal status. Under President Barack Obama there had been an effort to administratively close certain cases as a way of allowing judges to focus on higher-priority matters and reduce the immigration court backlog.

Republican gubernatorial candidate drives 'deportation bus’ around Georgia

Republican gubernatorial candidate drives 'deportation bus’ around GeorgiaA Republican candidate for governor of Georgia is driving a “deportation bus” around the state, promising to fill it with undocumented immigrants and “send them back to where they came from”. Michael Williams –a Georgia state senator and, according to his website, the first elected official in the state to endorse Donald Trump – announced this week that he would drive a bus around the state to raise awareness of the “overwhelming problem of illegal immigration”. “Throughout his bus tour of sanctuary cities, Williams will expose how dangerous illegal aliens ruin local economies, cost American jobs, increase healthcare costs, and lower education standards,” a statement on his Facebook page reads.

US Supreme Court restricts deportation of immigrant criminals just as Trump looks to increase them

US Supreme Court restricts deportation of immigrant criminals just as Trump looks to increase themThe Supreme Court has ruled to restrict mandatory deportation of immigrants convicted of some crimes, just as President Donald Trump’s administration is looking to increase them. In a 5-4 ruling, the court said the wording of the statute requiring the removal of non-citizens who commit certain felonies was unlawfully vague, a ruling that could limit the Trump administration’s ability to step up the removal of immigrants with criminal records. Mr Trump’s appointee to the court, conservative judge Neil Gorsuch, joined the court’s four liberal justices in siding with convicted California burglar James Garcia Dimaya, a legal immigrant from the Philippines.

UK PM to meet Commonwealth leaders over Windrush deportation row

UK PM to meet Commonwealth leaders over Windrush deportation rowBritish Prime Minister Theresa May will meet Commonwealth leaders this week to discuss a growing row over threatened deportations of people who moved to Britain from the Caribbean in the 1950s and 1960s, her spokesman said Monday. More than 140 British lawmakers have called for action over the “inhumane” treatment of members of the so-called Windrush generation, named after the ship that brought over the first group of West Indian immigrants in 1948. Leaders of the 53 Commonwealth countries are in London for their biennial heads of government meeting, and some member states have expressed alarm at the situation.
