Cuba says cause of US diplomats' illness still a mystery

Cuba says cause of US diplomats' illness still a mysteryCuban authorities on Sunday said they remained baffled by a mystery ailment that has afflicted numerous US diplomats on the island, with the latest case reported last month. More than 20 US officials posted in Havana have suffered injuries consistent with brain injury, which the US State Department has said could have been the result of a “health attack,” from an unidentified secret weapon, possibly an acoustic or microwave device. The bulk of cases took place between the end of 2016 and the summer of 2017, with symptoms including hearing loss, cognitive impairment, vertigo, insomnia or vision problems.

US blocks call for independent Gaza inquiry at UN: diplomats

US blocks call for independent Gaza inquiry at UN: diplomatsThe United States on Monday blocked the adoption of a UN Security Council statement that would have called for an independent probe of deadly violence on the Israel-Gaza border, which erupted as the new US embassy in Jerusalem was opened, diplomats said. “The Security Council expresses its outrage and sorrow at the killing of Palestinian civilians exercising their right to peaceful protest,” read a draft of the statement, a copy of which was seen by AFP. “The Security Council calls for an independent and transparent investigation into these actions to ensure accountability,” read the text.
