Hawaii volcano eruption: Is this the beginning – or the end?

Hawaii volcano eruption: Is this the beginning - or the end?Lava flows and a series of earthquakes, have now been followed by large clouds of toxic fumes and tiny glass-like particles known as “laze”, from Hawaii’s erupting volcano, Kilauea. Lava has also continued to gush out of large cracks in the ground in residential neighbourhoods, while two explosive eruptions unleashed clouds of ash from the volcano’s summit. The rate of sulphur dioxide gas being emitted from large cracks in the ground in these areas has also tripled, leading the county of Hawaii to repeat warnings about air quality.

Biggest eruption at Hawaii volcano since it became more active

Biggest eruption at Hawaii volcano since it became more activeHawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted from its summit early Thursday, shooting a huge plume of ash miles into the sky and prompting authorities to urge area residents to take cover. The Hawaii Volcano Observatory said the explosion within Kilauea’s Halemaumau crater — the biggest since the volcano became more active on May 3 — had produced a volcanic cloud that reached as high as 30,000 feet (9,000 meters) and was drifting downwind to the northeast. “Not your average wake-up call at the Kilauea Volcano summit,” the US Geological Survey said of the 4:17 am (local time) blast that lasted a few minutes.

Explosive eruption rocks Hawaii's Kilauea volcano

Explosive eruption rocks Hawaii's Kilauea volcanoHawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted from its summit before dawn Thursday, shooting a dusty plume of ash about 30,000ft into the sky. The explosion came after two weeks of volcanic activity and the opening of more than a dozen fissures east of the crater that spewed lava into neighborhoods, said Mike Poland, a geophysicist with the US Geological Survey. The lava destroyed has destroyed at least 26 homes and 10 other structures. The crater sits within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which has been closed since May 11 in preparation for an eruption. Officials have said they didn’t expect the explosion to be deadly as long as people remained out of the closed national park. An eruption in 1924 killed one person and sent rocks, ash and dust into the air for 17 days. Scientists warned on May 9 that a drop in the lava lake at the summit might create conditions for an explosion that could fling ash and boulders the size of refrigerators into the air. Scientists predicted it would mostly release trapped steam from flash-heated groundwater released as though it was a kitchen pressure cooker. Communities a mile or two away may be showered by pea-size fragments or dusted with nontoxic ash, they said. Kilauea volcano has been erupting continuously since 1983. It’s one of five volcanoes that comprise the Big Island of Hawaii, and the only one currently erupting.

Hawaii's Big Island braces for major volcano eruption, prepares for possible evacuation of 2,000

With scientists warning that a steam-driven volcanic eruption could occur virtually without warning, the Hawaii National Guard is prepared to use ground convoys and even helicopters if necessary to pluck hundreds of residents from an isolated southeast corner of Hawaii’s Big Island.
