Improved In vivo imaging of atherosclerotic plaque development

Researchers have developed a method for quantitatively assessing atherosclerotic plaque buildup in mice. They transplanted X-ray-irradiated low-density-lipoprotein-knockout mice with bone marrow cells expressing near-infrared fluorescent protein, which subsequently developed into fluorescent macrophages. These macrophages congregated specifically in atherosclerotic plaques that arose after feeding on a high-cholesterol diet. In vivo imaging detected the amount of aortic plaque formed and its change over time, which could help in assessing the efficacy of anti-atherosclerotic drugs.

Improved understanding of industrial electrode processes

In the industrial production of chlorine, recently special electrodes have been introduced, which consume much less current than conventional systems. The method requires oxygen which is introduced into hot, highly concentrated sodium hydroxide solution, in which it is poorly soluble. It is still unclear how industrial current densities can be achieved under these conditions. Researchers from Bochum and Clausthal have gained new insight into the processes involving these types of electrodes, also referred to as oxygen-depolarised cathodes.

Preparing for chemical attacks with improved computer models

Researchers have used computer models on the Stampede2 supercomputer to replicate the dispersal of gases from the April 4, 2017 chemical weapons attack in northwest Syria. The simulations were able to capture real world conditions despite a scarcity of information. Recently, the team developed a coarse model that uses seasonal conditions as background information to speed up calculations, reducing forecasting time from days to minutes.

U.N. chief suggests options for improved Palestinian protection

U.N. chief suggests options for improved Palestinian protectionThe United Nations General Assembly requested the report in a resolution adopted in June that condemned Israel for excessive force against Palestinian civilians and denounced the firing of rockets from Gaza into Israeli civilian areas, but did not mention Hamas, the Islamist group that controls Gaza. The final option could be to send additional U.N. human rights, coordination and political officers to boost monitoring and reporting on the situation and increase the U.N.’s visibility, Guterres said.
