West Bank Palestinians urge Abbas to ease sanctions on Gaza Strip

West Bank Palestinians urge Abbas to ease sanctions on Gaza StripBy Ali Sawafta and Nidal al-Mughrabi RAMALLAH/GAZA (Reuters) – Palestinian security forces on Wednesday used tear gas and batons against protesters calling on President Mahmoud Abbas to end financial sanctions on their fellow Palestinians in Gaza. Hundreds of protesters in the West Bank city of Ramallah faced down forces loyal to Abbas, who had banned such rallies earlier in the day. Abbas’s Western-backed Palestinian Authority (PA) has sought to use financial measures to isolate its chief rival Hamas, the Islamist movement which controls Gaza.

Israeli troops kill four Palestinians as Gaza protest resumes

Israeli troops kill four Palestinians as Gaza protest resumesBy Nidal al-Mughrabi GAZA (Reuters) – Israeli troops killed four Palestinians and wounded hundreds of others on Friday with live fire or tear gas used against protesters at the Gaza border, medics said, while Israel said militants had attacked its forces with guns and grenades. Organizers linked the protests to annual “Jerusalem Day” events in Iran, which like Gaza’s dominant Hamas Islamists preaches Israel’s destruction and was incensed by the U.S. recognition in December of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.

U.S. vetoes U.N. resolution denouncing violence against Palestinians

U.S. vetoes U.N. resolution denouncing violence against PalestiniansBy Rodrigo Campos UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – The United States vetoed on Friday a Kuwaiti-drafted U.N. Security Council resolution that condemned Israel’s use of force against Palestinian civilians, underlining Washington’s differences with friends and foes alike over the Israeli-Palestinian issue. Later, a second, U.S.-drafted resolution that blamed Hamas for the violence and upheld Israel’s right to defend itself failed to attract any other country’s support when it was put to vote in the 15-member council. Blasting the council majority, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said the two votes showed it was willing to blame Israel and unwilling to blame Hamas, the Islamist group that dominates Gaza.
