Syria rebels deny withdrawing arms from north under deal

Syria rebels deny withdrawing arms from north under dealSyrian rebels denied on Sunday they had pulled any heavy arms from a major opposition bastion in the north, as the deadline to implement a demilitarisation deal there draws closer. Regime ally Moscow and rebel backer Ankara agreed earlier this month to create a buffer zone around the opposition stronghold of Idlib that would be free of both jihadists and heavy arms. The deal has so far averted a massive assault on the region by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government, but its implementation in areas packed with rival jihadists and rebels is expected to be complex.

Pro-Turkey rebels in north Syria 'begin withdrawing' under deal

Pro-Turkey rebels in north Syria 'begin withdrawing' under dealPro-Turkey rebels began Sunday withdrawing from areas in northern Syria under a deal brokered by Ankara and Moscow to avert a large-scale military assault on the country’s last major opposition stronghold, a monitor said. Fighters from the Faylaq al-Sham group “began pulling out of areas in the southern countryside of Aleppo and the western suburbs of Aleppo city with heavy weapons, including tanks and cannons,” said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The pullback is in line with a plan agreed this month between regime ally Russia and rebel backer Turkey to avert a large-scale government offensive on Idlib province and surrounding rebel territory, which included setting up a demilitarised zone.

Syrian FSA rebels to cooperate with Turkey in Idlib, wary of Russia

Syrian FSA rebels to cooperate with Turkey in Idlib, wary of RussiaTurkey-allied Syrian rebels said on Saturday they would cooperate with Turkish diplomatic efforts that have halted a Russian-backed government offensive in Idlib, but they will not surrender their weapons or territory.
