Woman wearing anti-Trump T-shirt arrested after climbing up Statue of Liberty

Woman wearing anti-Trump T-shirt arrested after climbing up Statue of LibertyA woman who climbed to the feet of the Statue of Liberty on Wednesday to protest the separation of migrant families is in detention, police say.  For almost three hours on US Independence Day, Therese Patricia Okoumou – who has been described in US reports as Congolese immigrant who has been living in New York for 10 years – walked around the base of New York’s landmark statue.  At times she sat on the sandal of ‘Lady Liberty’ and on the folds of its dress. Ms Okoumou, said to be 44, declared she would not come down of the statue until “all the children are released”, referring to the children that have been held in detention centres away from their parents at the US-Mexico border. She had a t-shirt that said “Trumpcare makes us sick” on one side and “Rise and Resist” on the other. Authorities were forced to evacuate Liberty Island on the day the US celebrated its Independence Day.  The group Rise and Resist staged a protest at the Statue of Liberty against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Credit: REUTERS More than 20,000 visit the Statue of Liberty every July 4, according to the National Park Service.  Ms Okoumou was eventually escorted down with assistance from the New York Police Department Emergency Service Unit and taken into custody.  The Wall Street Journal reported that Ms Okoumou was charged with trespassing, disorderly conduct and interference with governmental administration and was being held by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. She is due to appear in a Manhattan Federal Court to be arraigned on Thursday morning, the Rise and Resist action group said in a statement.  The Trump administration came under fire after the US immigration enforcement agency was filmed taking children away from their parents as the families attempted to cross the border illegally. Following the furore, Donald Trump, the US president, signed an executive order to end family separations and a US District judge has ordered for children to be reunited with their parents.
