Minor explosion at Hawaii volcano spews more ash into the air

Minor explosion at Hawaii volcano spews more ash into the air(Reuters) – A small explosion at the summit of Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano shot more ash high into the atmosphere, putting communities in the southern part of the Big Island at risk, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said. The volcano, which has been erupting since early May, has sent occasional columns of ash and volcanic gas into the atmosphere at between 10,000 (3,050 meters) and 30,000 feet (9,145 meters) above sea level, it said. On Sunday, another explosion spewed ash from the volcano, creating a driving hazard for roads on parts of the Big Island.

A policeman wearing a blue surgical mask stumbled in the muck as he ran from a cloud of ash pouring down the slope behind him, Reuters photos showed.

Hawaii volcano spews 6 mile-high plume of ash, could blow again

Hawaii volcano spews 6 mile-high plume of ash, could blow againBy Terray Sylvester PAHOA, Hawaii (Reuters) – Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano spewed ash nearly six miles (9 km) into the sky on Thursday and scientists warned this could be the first in a string of more violent explosive eruptions with the next possibly occurring within hours. “This has relieved pressure temporarily,” U.S. Geological Survey geologist Michelle Coombs told a news conference in Hilo. “We may have additional larger, powerful events.” Residents of the Big Island were warned to take shelter from the ash as toxic gas levels spiked in a small southeast area where lava has burst from the ground during the two-week eruption.

Hawaii volcano spews 'ballistic blocks' into the sky in 'most energetic explosions yet'

Hawaii volcano spews 'ballistic blocks' into the sky in 'most energetic explosions yet'A smouldering volcano in Hawaii has hurled large stones hundreds of metres and sent clouds of ash drifting over a number of communities. Plumes of ash from Kilauea rose as high as 3,000 metres above sea level, dusting towns as far as 18 miles away with ash and air pollution known as “vog”. Rockfalls within one of the volcano’s vents helped unleash more activity, geologists said, abruptly pushing out more ash.
