(Reuters) – A 70-year-old woman and her two great-grandchildren were among six killed when a wildfire raged through an area of northern California and engulfed entire communities, officials and family members said. Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko told a news conference near the city of Redding at the edge of the blaze on Sunday one more person had been killed in a residence consumed by fire, bringing the total to six, including two firefighters.

California wildfire spreads quickly; thousands evacuated(Reuters) – A fast-moving wildfire driven by strong wind and high temperatures tore through homes north of Los Angeles late on Friday, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate. The blaze, one of dozens across the region, broke out in a building in Goleta, California at about 8:30 p.m. It spread to vegetation before burning up to 20 other buildings, fire officials said. Video footage showed firefighters battling fires at several homes, as Santa Barbara County authorities said at least 2,200 residents were evacuated and 2,000 were without power, according to a Twitter posting.

The County Fire, which broke out on Saturday afternoon in rural Yolo County, west of Sacramento, blackened more than 70,000 acres (28,800 hectares) of grass, brush and dense scrub oak. The United States is in the midst of an unusually active fire season, with the risk significantly above normal for many western states, according to federal forecasters.
