U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the envelopes initially tested positive for ricin after being detected by Pentagon police on Monday at a mail sorting facility on the Pentagon compound but not in the main building.

Eighteen of those ordered detained were on active duty, Anadolu news agency said, adding the suspects included 13 majors and 12 captains from the land forces and 24 first lieutenants from the navy. Authorities have carried out regular sweeps against alleged members of cleric Fethullah Gulen’s network since the coup attempt of July 2016, in which 250 people were killed.

US swimmer dies from suspected shark attack: policeA swimmer has died from an apparent shark bite off the coast of Massachusetts in the northeastern United States, a police report on the rare incident said. The victim, in his mid-20s, “was bitten by what is believed to be a shark” while he swam at Newcomb Hollow Beach in the Cape Cod area, Wellfleet Police said in a statement Saturday. “The town beaches are closed to swimming for the next 24 hours,” the police said.
