Thomas Markle Snr: How Meghan Markle's reclusive father helped propel her into the spotlight

Thomas Markle Snr: How Meghan Markle's reclusive father helped propel her into the spotlightJust days ahead of the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle it seems even Royal nuptials suffer last-minute setbacks, as  the bride-to-be has confirmed her father will no longer be able to attend the occasion. In a statement issued through Kensington Palace, Meghan Markle said: “Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding. I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health. Thomas Markle Snr underwent heart surgery on Wednesday, which he confirmed to TMZ had been completed later that day. The news came two days after it emerged he had allegedly collaborated with the paparazzi on a series of staged photographs. But what do we know about the previously reclusive father, who has made headlines around the world?  Where is Thomas Markle Snr from? Thomas Markle, the proud 73-year-old father, was born and raised in the state of Pennsylvania on the East Coast before his job as a cinematographer took him to Los Angeles. Markle was the lighting director on daytime medical drama General Hospital (the longest-running American soap opera still in production) when he met Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland, the assistant make-up artist at the studio, in 1979. Markle was 12 years older than Ragland; at 6ft 3in, he towered over his 5ft 2in bride. In an article written by Miss Markle for Elle UK, she describes her father’s progressive world-view and how it affected his relationship with her mother. “Growing up in a homogeneous community in Pennsylvania, the concept of marrying an African-American woman was not on the cards for my dad,” she writes. “But he saw beyond what was put in front of him in that small-sized (and, perhaps, small-minded) town, and he wanted me to see beyond that census placed in front of me. He wanted me to find my own truth.” Copy of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle: The story of their relationship, in pictures When did Meghan’s parents divorce? Markle already had two children from a prior relationship (Markle’s half-siblings Samantha and Thomas Jr); two years into their marriage, Ragland gave birth to Meghan. The union didn’t last much longer. Officially the divorce went through in 1988 when Miss Markle was six, with both parents’ sharing custody. However, in an interview with Vanity Fair, Miss Markle revealed that her mother and father split up when she was just two. Even though her parents weren’t together, the family would still go on holidays together and Miss Markle claims she never saw them fight. When dropping her off at the end of the weekend, her dad would stay for dinner while the three of them watched the game show Jeopardy!, eating their food on TV trays. How Meghan’s father helped to make her a star On her now deleted lifestyle blog The Tig, Miss Markle regularly paid tribute to her father, who despite working over 75 hours a week in his job would still find time to take her to ballet classes “religiously” every Saturday morning. She reminisces about fishing trips to Big Bear Lake in Southern California with her dad, and him lending a helping hand in the lighting of her high school musical shows, “so that they felt as grand as a Broadway show”. She would also post tributes to her father on Instagram (her account has now also been deleted), crediting him for her work ethic and love of handwritten thank-you notes (Miss Markle took a job as a freelance calligrapher to support herself at the beginning of her acting career). In an interview for Esquire, Miss Markle recalls visiting her dad at work. “Every day after school for 10 years, I was on the set of Married… with Children, which is a really funny and perverse place for a little girl in a Catholic school uniform to grow up. There were a lot of times my dad would say, “Meg, why don’t you go and help with the craft services room over there? This is just a little off-colour for your 11-year-old eyes.” A year later he won an estimated $750,000 in a Californian state lottery when his daughter was just nine years old. The win helped fund Miss Markle’s education through an all-girls private Catholic school and then Northwestern University where she studied theatre and international studies. After she graduated, Miss Markle returned to Los Angeles to try to make it as an actress, securing her first role in 2002 as a nurse on an episode of her father’s show, General Hospital. After a decade of minor parts, Miss Markle got her big break as Rachel Zane on the legal drama Suits. Filming took her to Toronto, Canada for the majority of the year while her father, who never remarried, continued working in Los Angeles. On her success, Miss Markle told Vanity Fair: “My father knew how hard it is for an actor to get work, so he above all people was so proud that I was able to beat the odds.” Retirement and bankruptcy In 2011 he won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Lighting Direction for a Drama Series before retiring from the business a year later. On retirement, he moved to Mexico, where he is still thought to live. In 2016, he filed for bankruptcy claiming he had just $200 to his name (Meghan’s mother has also filed for bankruptcy back in 2002). In the TV interview used to announce their engagement, Miss Markle said that while Harry had met her mother a few times (to which a beaming smile spread across his face – “she’s amazing”) he has yet to meet her father. However, the pair  have spoken over the phone. A joint statement, with a Kensington Palace letterhead, was released by her parents on the engagement news. It read: “Our daughter has always been a kind and loving person. To see her union with Harry, who shares the same qualities, is a source of great joy for us as parents”. However, after confirming he will not attend the ceremony, it may instead now fall to Ms Markle’s mother to give her away at the altar. The wedding week u-turns Two days before the wedding, Meghan Markle has confirmed her father Thomas Markle will not be attending her wedding to Prince Harry, saying she hopes he can be given the “space he needs to focus on his health”.  Thomas Markle Snr had been intending to travel from his Mexico home to the UK to meet his future son-in-law for the first time, as well as the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall and Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. He was also intending to walk Ms Markle down the aisle on Saturday, meeting her at the chapel’s west door after her drive to the ceremony with her mother. But after disclosures about his alleged dealings with the paparazzi and reports he suffered a heart attack earlier this month, the 73-year-old said on Monday he would avoid the ceremony for fear of embarrassing his daughter. The Mail On Sunday newspaper reported the story at the weekend claiming the images were staged and published CCTV footage stills of the US actress’ father in the internet cafe with a photographer. Royal wedding | Read more The pictures were published earlier this month in a number of newspapers and news websites showing Mr Markle in a series of royal wedding related activities, apparently unaware he was being snapped. Mr Markle was pictured being measured for what was thought to be his wedding suit, looking at screen pictures of Ms Markle and Harry while in an internet cafe, and reading a picture book about Britain while having a coffee. On Tuesday he revealed he required heart surgery after falling unwell again. He told the site: “They [doctors] will go in and clear blockage, repair damage and put a stent where it is needed.” On Wednesday night TMZ reported that Thomas Markle had been in touch to say his heart surgery had been completed.

Is Thomas Markle's story of whether to attend the royal wedding a 'rollercoaster of speculation' or a cruel soap opera?Perhaps there really was a time, long ago, when if one wanted to be informed of the activities of the royal family, one consulted the court circular. Now, of course, you go on US celebrity gossip website TMZ. And there in glaring headlines you find a story, not of family joy at a forthcoming wedding, but of pain and suffering – much of it heaped on Meghan Markle’s 73-year-old father Thomas. You could, as one newspaper has, call it “a rollercoaster of speculation surrounding whether Mr Markle would attend Saturday’s royal wedding at Windsor Castle in Berkshire”.

Heart surgery stops Thomas Markle attending Meghan and Harry's wedding – as her mother flies in

Heart surgery stops Thomas Markle attending Meghan and Harry's wedding - as her mother flies inMeghan Markle’s father is to ungergo heart surgery which will stop him from walking his daughter down the aisle, it emerged last night. After a day of confusion, in which he appeared to change his plans repeatedly, Thomas Markle announced via US celebrity website TMZ that he was due to have an operation and would not attend the Royal wedding on Saturday. It marked a dramatic turn of events and came just hours after an earlier u-turn, in which he said he would be at the wedding.  The furore began on Monday when the 73-year-old said he would avoid the ceremony for fear of embarrassing his daughter in the wake of a controversy surrounding his collusion with the paparazzi. However, on Tuesday he raised hopes of attending after all by saying his daughter had been in touch to reassure him, and was prepared to fly to Britain if his medical condition allowed. Mr Markle is reported to have said: “I hate the idea of missing one of the greatest moments in history and walking my daughter down the aisle.” But within hours he appeared to change his plans for a third time, claiming he required heart surgery after falling unwell again. He told the site: “They [doctors] will go in and clear blockage, repair damage and put a stent where it is needed.” Playing out via TMZ, the abrupt changes raised further fears for Mr Markle’s well-being. Royal wedding countdown in pictures as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s preparations begin Kensington Palace has not commented on any of the claims, repeating only a plea for understanding and respect for Mr Markle. Meghan Markle, he claimed, harbours “no ill feelings” towards him for the unfortunate episode, in which he was exposed for working with the paparazzi despite Kensington Palace’s repeated insistence that he wished to remain private. The confusion leaves plans for the royal wedding in further disarray, irreversibly overshadowing the marriage of Prince Harry and Ms Markle.  Markle family His inclusion in the wedding was only confirmed for the first time on May 4, with the 73-year-old planning to fly from his home in Mexico to Britain to meet the Queen and all senior members of the Royal Family before the big day. Instead, on Monday, he disclosed he had pulled out of walking Ms Markle down the St George’s Chapel aisle “because he doesn’t want to embarrass the Royal family or his daughter”. A Kensington Palace spokesman said: “This is a deeply personal moment for Ms Markle in the days before her wedding. “She and Prince Harry ask again for understanding and respect to be extended to Mr Markle in this difficult situation.” In comments that have not been confirmed or denied by the palace, Mr Markle said his daughter had sent him messages telling him that she loved him and was concerned about him. It is understood that neither she or her husband-to-be Prince Harry hold him accountable for his decision to work with the paparazzi, believing him to have been placed under intolerable pressure by their presence. Doria Ragland, Ms Markle’s mother, is flying to Britain, and is expected to meet the Queen this week as planned. She is expected to be the alternative choice to walk Ms Markle down the aisle. Tracy Dooley – who was married to Meghan Markle’s half-brother Thomas Markle Jr – was pictured at Heathrow Airport with her sons, Tyler, 25, and Thomas, 26. Ms Dooley has previously told ITV’s Good Morning Britain she had not received an invitation to the ceremony at Windsor Castle on Saturday, admitting she had not seen Ms Markle for 20 years. She is expected to cover the event for an American broadcasting network and said she “will be in the front row cheering them on” in Windsor. The Dooleys took to Facebook to announce their presence in the capital on Monday evening. Man, what a journey so far,” he wrote. “We’re safe and sound.” Ms Dooley lives in Medford, Oregon, according to her Facebook, but is originally from Calabasas in California.  She is listed as a creative advertising and marketing specialist at Opus Broadcasting – a company responsible for a handful of radio stations, according to its website.  On May 3, she shared a link to her personal blog, saying she was travelling to London to “cover all things Royal wedding”. Upon the family’s arrival, the Facebook blog page – called Royal Wedding with the Dooley Markles – posted a picture of the trio landing at Heathrow with the caption: “Just glad to have landed safely and hoping for Tom senior to be well, healthy and happy. “I wish the same for Meghan, Prince Harry, my children, friends, family and those who need our prayers and love. Peace, love and good works.” In April, the blog’s page, which appears to be run by Ms Dooley, shared an article headlined “Meghan Markle snubs nephew and his mum with no invite to Royal wedding.” It was accompanied with the caption: “Beyond blessed to be any part of this momentous occasion. We’ll be front and center at Windsor cheering Meghan and Prince Harry on.”

Thomas Markle 'will not fly to Meghan and Harry's wedding after suffering heart attack'

Thomas Markle 'will not fly to Meghan and Harry's wedding after suffering heart attack'Meghan Markle’s father will not attend the Royal wedding to walk her down the aisle, it has been claimed, after it emerged he had collaborated with the paparazzi on a series of photographs.  Thomas Markle, 73, said he would no longer be attending his daughter’s wedding to Prince Harry on Saturday, where he was supposed to be taking a starring role. Mr Markle reportedly told American website TMZ that he had suffered a heart attack six days ago, but had checked himself out of hospital and had been intending to fly to Britain. He will no longer make the journey to meet his future son-in-law Prince Harry, he said, or keep planned appointments with the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall and Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Kensington Palace has not confirmed the accuracy of the report, and have not yet commented. Thomas Markle puff TMZ, the celebrity gossip website, quoted Mr Markle as saying he meant no harm to Ms Markle or Prince Harry after taking part in an arranged photoshoot with a paparazzi agency. He allegedly claimed he had not made the decision because of money, but in order to recast his image after a series of unflattering photographs were taken. “He’s now decided not to go [to the wedding] because he doesn’t want to embarrass the Royal Family or his daughter,â€ TMZ reported. Hours earlier, Meghan Markle’s half-sister claimed responsibility for a setting up a controversial paparazzi photoshoot for her father. Samantha Grant, who is no longer in contact with Ms Markle, said she had suggested their father pose for “positive” photographs “for the benefit of the Royal Family”. Thomas Markle with baby Meghan Credit: TIM STEWART NEWS LIMITED Instead, the images caused deep embarrassment, appearing to show Mr Markle colluding with photographers despite Kensington Palace’s repeated insistence that he was a private individual who had no interest in working with the media. Ms Grant, writing on Twitter, said: “The bad press over my father doing staged photos is my fault. “The media was unfairly making him look bad so I suggested he do positive photos for his benefit and the benefit of the royal family. “We had no idea he would be taken advantage of. It was not for money.â€ It is not clear what Ms Grant meant in her claim that he had been “taken advantage of”. Appearing on Loose Women on Monday, she elaborated to say that she was “entirely the culpritâ€ in staging the photographs, convincing her father that it would be to his advantage to show himself in a positive light. “It was my suggestion that to benefit him and to benefit the Royal Family and that everyone looked good, and they depict you as you are,â€ she said. An official engagement photo released by Kensington Palace of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Credit: Reuters Pressed on whether he had been paid for his cooperation, Ms Grant said: “I have no idea but if he did I’m going to assume it was a pittance, because they don’t pay that much. “It was really so that the world could see him doing the healthy things that he’s doing.â€ Asked about the effect on Kensington Palace, after aides repeatedly insisted Mr Markle did not wish to be photographed, she conceded: “I can understand why it would be awkward.â€ Her brother, also called Thomas, has said that Mr Markle “won’t saying anything publicly but he’ll apologise sincerely to Meg and the Royal Family”.   Mr Markle has been receiving the support of Kensington Palace since news of Ms Markle’s engagement brought him into the public eye, with a source saying aides would “continue to make interventions with the media out of concern for his safety and securityâ€. Kensington Palace has previously issued warnings to the media not to publish pictures of Mr Markle or Ms Markles mother, Doria Ragland, taken under circumstances of harassment, insisting they had no wish to take part in any personal publicity. But a series of photographs, printed in the tabloid press, aroused suspicion after showing Mr Markle exercising in public, reading a book called “Images of Britainâ€, being measured for a suit, and looking up pictures of his daughter in an internet cafe. This weekend, the Mail on Sunday published CCTV images appearance to show him collaborating with a photographer, walking into the cafe with him and setting up the best angle.
